pokémon
when I was a kid, one of my neighbours had a pikachu toy and as soon as I saw it I wanted to know everything. a while after that my mum ended up finding a pokémon blue cartridge at a garage sale and bought it for me. at the time I was a huge fan of lizards and that influenced who became my first pokémon - charmander. I didn't make it very far in the game back then, and I remember having difficulties reading the dialogue. I used to think the pokémon centre ladies were saying "hell" and not "heal" your pokémon...!!!
eventually I got a copy of pokémon ruby. I adored treecko and its entire evolution line. I got a lot further in this game than blue, thanks to the help of my friend and her brother. her brother had a copy of emerald and I remember thinking how pretty the game cartridge was. at one point we swapped games around to play the other versions and I was crushed when I found out my friend's brother had deleted my save file!! it's okay though i'll always remember my awesome sceptile.
after that I kept up with Pokémon games, cards, and movies as best I could. i've got a lot of good memories about going to school and trading the cards with friends. I got a really cool raikou card from someone and it makes me wonder what I traded for it way back then... I think we ended up getting cards banned at school because it's all kids would ever talk about. the movies and anime series were a fixation of mine. I dunno how many times I rented a Pokémon VHS from Blockbuster just to play it on repeat when I got home. as I grew older I have had different friend groups who also loved pokémon and we'd watch the movies and shows together, which are really fond memories of mine too...
my favourite pokémon for the longest time was charizard. really basic, I was clinging onto the nostalgia. though when I really thought about it, it was totodile. I never played the gen 2 games when they first came out, but I did play the remakes, and chose totodile as my starter. I love all its evolutions, they're the coolest ever in my opinion! they combine my favourite colours and my favourite animals.
it's a difficult choice but I'd say ruby is my favourite game of the main series. my favourite region is kalos, though. my fave professor is sycamore, my fave gym leader is larry, and my fave gang is the rust syndicate.
